Skybound Entertainment, a company owned by Robert Kirkman and Dave Alpert, has reached an agreement with Skydance Interactive to collaborate on the development of The Walking Dead virtual reality (VR) game. On Wednesday, the two companies made the above statement at the E3 Entertainment Show in Los Angeles.
The first game is expected to be released in 2018. Dan Murray, president of Skybound Interactive, said in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine this week: “Our goal is to provide something great.â€
Reports on Skybound's development of the Walking Dead VR version first appeared in the Vanity Fair magazine in April this year.
Murray said that for some time, Skybound has been seeking to enter the field of virtual reality. “We have always been very patient,†he said. “Waiting for the development of the media to find suitable opportunities for intervention.†Eventually, his team decided to interact with Skydance because the latter’s vision for this product met his expectations. "They are very creative about this matter," Murray said.
"The Walking Dead is the perfect IP," said Skydance president Peter Akeman.
No platform has yet decided to launch the game, but Aikman said the sales target is for all existing high-end systems, possibly including Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR. He said: "We are eager for interactive virtual reality."
Despite the lag in sales of head-mounted displays, Ickman is optimistic about the trajectory of VR. "We have seen a strong commercial interest this year," he said. "The situation we are seeing is very encouraging," especially as Sony's PlayStation VR sold more than one million units. "Sony's platform has changed the rules of the game," Aikman said.
