Electrostatic protection of low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) interfaces

LVDS, Low Voltage DifferenTIal Signaling, is a low voltage differential signaling technology interface. It is a digital video signal transmission method developed by American NS Corporation (National Semiconductor Corporation) to overcome the shortcomings of high power consumption and large EMI electromagnetic interference when transmitting broadband high bit rate data in TTL level mode.

LVDS data line connections are widely used for high-speed data signal transmission, for example, in commercial printers or LCD panels and adapter boards. These applications require TVS protection due to the use of sensitive IC devices. For these high speed data lines, rail-to-rail protection devices are fully applicable. In addition, due to the frequent generation of static electricity during the production assembly process, it is necessary to increase the TVS to protect. Semtech has introduced a 12-line TVS-RClamp7512N in the past few years, which has been successfully applied to LVDS line protection. The features are as follows:

1. Straight-through design can improve signal integrity

LVDS is a high-speed signal interface, so TVS with increased signal lines is required to be easily routed.

Advantages of straight-through design:

- Reduce the offset between the pairs because the length of the trace and the position of the protection element are the same on each pair of lines

- Reduce the number of trace bends to improve signal integrity and speed

- the length of the line is the smallest

- Good common mode rejection of a pair of differential lines is due to tightly coupled traces (0.5mm pitch)

- Keep the line intact

2. The lower junction capacitance, only 2pF, also has a very low leakage current (maximum 0.5uA).

3. Strong electrostatic protection ability, can directly resist 30KV air discharge and 25KV contact discharge.
