Artificial neural system provides tactile sensation for robots

Researchers at Stanford University in the United States and Seoul National University in South Korea have developed an artificial sensory nervous system that activates twitching reflexes and recognizes Braille letters. Related articles published in the recent issue of Science, the work of creating artificial skin for artificial limbs, is the first step in restoring the amputee's feelings, and may one day provide some reflexivity for the robot .

The result mimics how the skin stretches and repairs itself. Like an intelligent sensory network, it not only knows how to convey a pleasant feeling to the brain, but also knows when to order muscles to make reflective and timely decisions. Bao Zinnan, a professor of chemical engineering at Stanford University and one of the senior authors of the paper, said that skin is a complex sensing, signaling, and decision-making system. The artificial sensory nervous system is a key step in creating a skin-like sensory neural network for a variety of applications.

The artificial sensory nerve circuit described in this paper can be embedded in future skin-like coverings for neuroprosthetic devices and software robots. It integrates three important components - the touch sensor is able to detect very small external pressures; flexible electronic neurons can emit signals; and artificial synaptic transistors can sense signal stimulation. Among them, bio synapses can transmit signals and can store information to make simple decisions, and synaptic transistors perform these functions in artificial neural circuits.

The panelists tested the system's ability to produce reflections and touches. In one test, they attached the artificial nerve to the lame leg and applied a small pressure increment to the touch sensor. The electronic neuron converts the sensor signal into a digital signal and transmits it through the synaptic transistor, causing the kick to twitch more or less as the pressure on the touch sensor increases or decreases. In another test, this artificial nerve was also able to distinguish Braille letters.
