In order to provide a better experience for AR, many manufacturers and research institutions choose to break through from the lens. We have also introduced several options before, such as combining lens with nanotechnology, or combining with liquid crystal technology.
Smart glasses naturally need smart lenses, and traditional lens technology is difficult to break through, so the emergence of so many cross-domain lenses is natural.
Today is an optical glass lens that can provide greater FOV.
SCHOTT recently announced the lens SCHOTT Realview. SCHOTT is a 130-year-old company that specializes in specialty glass and materials. The main areas involved are aerospace, medical, electronics, transportation, and what we call today.
Ordinary lenses have a refractive index of 1.5, SCHOTT Realview at 1.6 to 2.0, and a higher refractive index means a larger FOV, which leads to a better experience.
For lenses with a refractive index of up to 2.0, SCHOTT has 120 combinations.
SCHOTT Realview's glass wafer surface geometry is controlled to an unprecedented level of accuracy, ten times flatter than industry standards.
Enables the image to reach the highest resolution and highest contrast.
At the same time the lens is smaller and thinner, which means a smaller device.
SCHOTT Realview consists of three layers, which are used to input and correct images in this way.
The coating on the outermost layer enables the thin and light lenses to have high hardness and wear resistance.
The technology SCHOTT Realview mainly relies on is SCHOTT's advantages in the melting and surface treatment of optical materials. It has strict control over the key factors affecting image quality such as glass melt in wafer production, wafer processing and optical coating.
And compared to the high-tech lenses we introduced earlier, glass lenses are significantly easier to prepare, can meet the rapidly expanding market demand, and are super-standard.
Most importantly, SCHOTT Realview is already mass-produced, and SCHOTT has invested in infrastructure to ensure that they are fully capable of increasing production to meet market demand.
In order to ensure the manufacture of high quality substrates and wafers, on March 7th this year, SCHOTT announced that it has established a new joint venture with Crystal Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. and its subsidiary Taijia Electronics - Zhejiang Jingte Optical Technology Co., Ltd., in the joint venture company, China’s shareholding accounts for 54%.
And SCHOTT Realview will be producing at this new joint venture company.
From SCHOTT in Germany, the use of high-tech furnace facilities to produce glass raw materials, and then China's wafer manufacturing and optical coating. The relevant manufacturing technologies are provided by SCHOTT's German and Swiss factories.
Crystal Optoelectronics also stated that this joint venture will form an overall advantage from raw materials, process development to mass production management, and provide downstream customers with integrated supply chain capabilities.
Conclusion
The main publicity point of SCHOTT Realview is that it can be produced on a large scale, and it is still at home. The impact is real and may be in the near future.
From May 22 to May 24, experts from SCHOTT's Advanced Optics team will present AR glass at Display Week 2018 in Los Angeles, California, where we can learn more detailed techniques.
