Google releases 5 new tools to help develop high performance Daydream applications

At the Vision Summit yesterday, Nathan Martz, Google’s developer platform product manager, staged a new tool to help developers develop high-performance applications for the Daydream VR platform.

The first Daydream heads-up and compatible phones were released in the second half of 2016, and Matts said that Google's next step is to expand the scale of the platform. He said: "We are focusing on scaling up with the larger Android ecosystem this year (Daydream and Tango). We know these devices are cool, but it's not easy to make. People are ultimately based on the experience they bring. Make a purchase."

Enlarging the scale means allowing developers to build fun and emphasizing optimized VR experiences. Google also hopes to make the development process easier. Unity 5.6 has added native support for Daydream in March, allowing developers to develop applications for the Android VR platform without having to download any custom build or preview versions.

But everything does not stop there: Mattez said Google is still investing in the Daydream developer platform to help developers create great VR content. The company is introducing new tools designed to help Daydream developers more easily develop applications for the platform. At today’s Vision Summit, Mattez talks about new tools that will be introduced to developers:

Due to the high resolution required in a stereoscopic environment and the need to achieve a stable high frame rate, VR imposes severe performance requirements. In order to run VR on mobile devices, we need to carefully optimize the application to meet the required performance of the system. For many developers, this means less reliance on compute-intensive baked lights and shadows, as this will eventually only appear as a static texture, not as real-time lighting.

Daydream Renderer

Google said that their latest Daydream Renderer is a highly optimized tool designed to solve the challenge of providing high quality lighting for Daydream applications. With this tool, developers can achieve dynamic lighting and shadowing at 60 FPS on today's flagship phones, making mobile VR closer to the modern graphics quality on consoles and PCs.

Mattez said that for traditional mobile-side development, developers need to write code on a computer, then spend a few minutes compiling and transfer it to an Android device for testing.

2. Instant Preview

Mattez said that Instant Preview makes this test process only a few seconds, not minutes. This allows developers to quickly iterate to achieve a better end product. Matts pointed out that Instant Preview can achieve this through changes in computer software and mobile hardware, and the delay is very low enough for developers to view and test these instant changes through the Daydream heads-up display.

VR applications not only need to look great, but they also need to run within the range of smartphone performance and heat (a daunting task). If the smartphone overheats, we must reduce the performance to prevent overheating, which may cause the performance of VR to decline, and even shut down the VR application. Taking into account different equipment and environmental conditions, it is particularly challenging to ensure that mobile VR games run effectively for long periods of time.

3. GAPID & PerfHUD

Mattez said that PerfHUD aims to help developers determine which areas of games and applications put the most pressure on smartphone hardware.

GAPID allows developers to "deep GPU analysis and static analysis" on the PC to help developers gain insights into how hardware and software interact, further improving performance, and again allowing developers to be aware of areas of the problem that may cause performance degradation.

4. Daydream Elements

Although several mainstream titles have been listed for more than a year now, the interaction design between VR applications is still very different. Consistency will certainly bring convenience to VR users, just like the common interactions that PC and smartphone applications take.

In order to share its own lessons learned about the best experiments for VR interaction design, Google plans to introduce Daydream Elements. Mattez described it as "a modular open source application that contains key examples of best practices." Daydream Elements will provide templates for general VR interaction, such as manipulating and activating objects, and selecting items on the menu. Google is also encouraging developers to use these templates and import them directly into their own applications as needed.

Mattez said that Daydream Renderer, Instant Preview and Daydream Elemens will be launched this month, and PerfHUD and GAPID will be launched this summer.

With the launch of the Gear VR controller, there is not much difference between the development of Daydream and the development of Gear VR, because both parties support Unity and run on Android. Although Google does not specifically mention it, these tools may be used to develop Gear VR. Xiaobian has now contacted Google for verification.
