Why did Apple ARKit win Google Tango?

Bloomberg today published an article saying that 1 billion Mac devices running iOS have advantages over Google’s scattered Android devices.

Bloomberg pointed out that although “Alphabet’s Google launched AR tools three years earlier than Apple, few mobile phones have related functions and have not received wide acceptance. In contrast, Apple can easily pair its software and equipment. Developers said this The advantages can help Apple quickly make up for lost ground.

Now that Google is starting with Apple, Apple has become a trend. Google Wallet launched the market a year earlier than Apple Pay, but Apple Pay has gained even greater popularity in an instant. This situation is likely to happen to Apple's ARKit.

Arbel Güller, who developed the AR program, agrees: "When they launch (ARKit), my application will be able to support millions of mobile phones. This is a major update. Let us go further."

Bloomberg's article further pointed out that "Google launched its own AR software system Tango in 2014 and conducted a recent iteration in January this year. Unlike ARKit, Tango requires an infrared depth-sensing sensor, and only two phones currently support Tango. Technology, such as Lenovo's Phab 2 Pro and Asus's ZenFone AR, in contrast, Apple's ARKit can use Phone's existing hardware (such as cameras and gyroscopes) to achieve similar goals."

The problem with Google is the so-called fragmentation. When updating the Android mobile operating system, the speed at which hardware vendors and cellular network operators push new software is often slow. This means that the latest features like Tango can only reach a fraction of the 2 billion active Android phones. Apple designs its own software and hardware. They can better control when and how the operating system is loaded onto the iPhone. The result is: 86% of Apple's mobile devices are running the latest iOS software, while Android devices running the latest Android operating system is only 11.5%.

For example, the designer of the digital studio Divers Collective, Tango has attracted their interest, but not enough to allow them to use this technology. In contrast, when ARKit was launched in June, the team has begun to use this tool to develop AR experiences, including a computer-generated rocket landing in the pool; and a 3D moon floating in the living room.

For Apple, ARKit is the basis for future AR equipment. We have reported a series of news about Apple's update of its trademark to support future smart glasses, and this is a sign of the ongoing Apple Smart Eyewear project.
