AI can write news, can make music, can imitate human voice, why can't it be used to fight disease?
Atomwise, a project of the Y Combinator incubator, did just that. Their AtomNet, a neural network medical development system, is trying to develop therapeutic drugs for diseases such as Ebola and multiple sclerosis. Atomwise consulted a number of academic and non-profit organizations on what diseases they are currently working on to develop drugs, so that Atomwise can also try together.
Of course, the medicines that AI studies are consistent with human treatment: they need to undergo multiple tests without ensuring safety. But Atomwise thinks their difference is that AI's research speed is faster.
Alexander Levy, co-founder and COO of the company, said that there is no difference between molecules and pixels in the eyes of AI.
In fact Atomwise is not the first company to test the water. BenevolentAI and Janssen, a Johnson & Johnson company, are jointly conducting similar trials. TwoXAR studied drugs for the treatment of glaucoma. Berg wants to use an algorithm to treat cancer.
Advantages of Atomwise? Levy said that their neural networks work in conjunction with 3D models. AI starts with a 3D model of a molecule and then analyzes its possible molecular models and targets. Levy compares this approach to the aerodynamics of airplanes and computer chip designs—though much of the work is on computers—they are, in the final analysis, simulating the real world.
