Facing ARM: Intel's new tablet platform will be born with Windows 8

Bill Kircos, director of public relations for Intel’s products and technology media, revealed today that “Cloverview”, the next-generation Atom platform designed for tablet computers, will come along with Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows 8, and the new platform will adapt well to Windows 8. In addition to tablet computers, it can also be used on netbooks and other portable devices.

Bill Kircos did not give a more specific time, but Windows 8 is as early as next April, and the third quarter is late, the new Atom platform is almost this range.

The Cloverview platform made its debut at the Beijing IDF in April this year. Its processor is codenamed "Clover Trail" and manufactured on 32nm process. The current Oak Trail platform Atom Z600 series is still 45nm. Bill Kircos said that the new processor will significantly reduce power consumption and extend battery life with new processes, but the specific data will be gone.

Processors also use 32nm technology. The two broad categories of processors, Cedar Trail and Medfield, which are aimed at netbooks and smart phones, will also be released in the second half of this year. In the face of the ARM camp, the pressure on Atom is not small.
