On October 15, Facebook-based virtual reality (VR) company Oculus recently acquired InfiniLE, a startup based in Ireland. InfiniLE specializes in low-power LED displays.
Founded in 2010, InfiniLE was originally spun off from the Tyndall National Institute in Ireland. The Tyndall National Institute is a research center dedicated to photonics and micro/nanoelectronics and works closely with University College Cork. InfiniLE is able to deliver more powerful ILED smart displays (including LEDs) at a lower cost. These smart displays are part of the next generation of technology and will be as successful as OLED, plasma and LCD.
The news about Oculus' acquisition of InfiniLE first appeared in the local media in Ireland, after some observers discovered that the "Oculus" logo was posted on the door of InfiniLE's office. Of course, VentureBeat has confirmed to Oculus alone that Oculus has acquired InfiniLED, which has actually joined Oculus's research team at Cork. However, for the share of the deal and other terms, the Oculus spokesperson simply said, "No comment, we can tell you already."
It's no surprise that Oculus wants to invest in a research team that can produce low-power displays. Oculus confirmed that the company is looking for more options, not only to improve the effectiveness of its virtual reality helmet equipment, but also to save product costs in the long run.
In 2014, Facebook acquired Oculus for $2 billion, and two and a half years later, Oculus acquired a number of companies. In June 2014, Oculus also acquired the well-known designer Carbon Design Group, which also participated in the design and development of Microsoft somatosensory games. Later, Oculus continued to acquire game network engine company RakNet, and quietly acquired virtual reality company Nimble VR and 13th Lab, computer vision product startup Surreal Vision and motion sensing technology startup Pebbles Interfaces.
