After thousands of discharge impact tests, the National Grid technicians successfully obtained the external insulation parameters of the 1100 kV DC UHV transmission line. Insulation technology is one of the core technologies of UHV. The higher the voltage level, the higher the required insulation requirements. The breakthrough of this technology means that China has completely overcome the technical difficulties of 1100 kV DC UHV transmission. Previously, after nearly two years of trials, it has broken through a series of core technologies including the design and manufacturing of converter valves, equipment insulation, and wire selection. This achievement is applied to the construction of UHV transmission lines and will increase the capacity of positive and negative 800 kV direct current UHV lines that are put into operation by 1.8 times to 13.75 million kilowatts, and the transmission distance will also be greatly increased.

It is understood that by 2020, China will plan to build 5 UHV lines that use this 1100 kV DC transmission technology, and the annual transmission capacity will exceed 300 billion kWh.
