According to Reuters, market research firm Gartner lowered its global PC shipment growth forecast this year. Gartner expects PC shipments in 2011 to grow by 9.3% to 385 million units. Gartner's previous forecast was a 10.5% increase.
According to Gartner, during the past decade, most of the time, PC shipment growth has been driven by consumers. Due to the continuing uncertainty of the economy and the lack of replacement reasons, consumers are still reluctant to consume, resulting in slower growth of PC shipments and mature markets relying on companies to drive growth again.
Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner, said: "Consumer mobile PCs can no longer drive growth due to the sharp decline in consumer interest in mini-laptops. Tablet PCs such as the iPad have also affected the growth of laptop sales," said Gartner research director Ranjit Atwal. However, the more likely reason is that these products cause consumers to delay the purchase of new laptops instead of directly replacing old computers with tablets."
Gartner analyst Raphael Vasquez said: “The growth of PCs in the next 18 months will be supported by the upgrading of professionals. During the recession, companies have significantly reduced the speed of update. Now companies are changing more aggressively. For the old PC, we expect that the growing need for enterprises to abandon Windows XP will lead to a significant increase in professional upgrades."
