STMicroelectronics Launches New Motion Sensor Technology

STMicroelectronics (ST), a supplier of MEMS (multi-electro-mechanical system) sensors across multiple electronics applications, leading global semiconductor suppliers and the world’s largest consumer electronics and portable devices, introduced two miniature packages in 2x2mm Ultra-low power and high performance triaxial accelerometer chips. The new product is 50% smaller than the previous generation, making it particularly suitable for consumer electronics products such as mobile phones, tablet computers, and game consoles, which have strict power consumption and size restrictions.

ST's LIS2DH and LIS2DM provide extremely accurate high-resolution measurement data output in the full range of ±2g/±4g/±8g/±16g, providing excellent time stability and temperature stability. Both sensors are equipped with advanced features including 4D/6D direction detection and two programmable interrupt signals. When an event such as movement, free fall, etc. is found, the interrupt signal can be immediately notified.

ST's new accelerometers are specifically designed for power-limited battery-operated portable devices, incorporating two power-saving modes of shutdown and sleep, and first-in-first-out (FIFO) memory blocks for advanced intelligent power management. The chip has a built-in temperature sensor and a self-test function. After the sensor is assembled to the circuit board, the customer can verify whether the sensor is working properly through the self-test function.

The LIS2Dx family of products is compatible with STMicroelectronics' existing 3-axis accelerometer software, so customers can directly replace new products with previous ones, thereby protecting their investment in application R&D.
