Intel completes acquisition of Mobileye to produce 100 Class 4 self-driving cars

Electronic enthusiasts eight o'clock: Intel after the acquisition of Mobileye, joined the driverless car war.

Intel announced on Wednesday that it will produce 100 self-driving cars of class 4, just a step away from fully automated driving.

Level 4 automatic driving technology is still in the road test

This week, Intel’s $15 billion acquisition of Israeli driverless technology provider Mobileye was announced. This makes Intel expected to launch a self-developed driverless car in 2018.

Intel said the new autopilot test program will be conducted in the US, Europe and Israel, but will not replace Intel's autopilot lab.

On May 17 this year, Intel and Mobileye have teamed up with German auto supplier Delphi and BMW to develop autonomous vehicle platforms and open them to other automakers. Intel said last year that it will invest $250 million to support the technology of startups in the driverless sector.

The highest level of autonomous driving technology is level 5, and once it is launched, it will be the highest level of autonomous driving technology to date. Bitsla's Autopilot and other common autonomous driving functions on the market are advanced. . However, many car and autopilot companies, including Tesla, are testing Level 4 self-driving cars.

Tesla currently has a level of autopilot between level 3 and level 4. Tesla Asia Pacific Engineering Director Wang Wenjia told the First Financial Reporter: "Tesla's autopilot, as its name suggests, is still assisted driving, but this is the most advanced assisted driving system available on the market. Now there is no technology known as Level 4. Going on the market or still testing and developing."

Intel’s high-profile announcement of its unmanned driving is also a declaration of war between rivals Qualcomm and Nvidia. At present, Qualcomm holds the chip share of most smartphones. The company announced last year that it has acquired semiconductor giant NXP (US$47 billion), which is also optimistic about the chip demand in emerging fields such as automobiles.

NVIDIA is the leader in high-end GPU markets such as games and autopilots. At this year's CES Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nvidia CEO Huang Renxun announced the company's ambitious plans for autonomous driving technology. NVIDIA has thus become a star stock of Nasdaq, and NVIDIA's share price has nearly tripled in the past year.

Intel has also made a number of layouts in the data industry chain, including the acquisition of new technologies through acquisitions. Intel CEO Ke Zaiqi said: "In less than a year, Intel and Mobileye have made significant progress in cooperation and provided a scalable platform for driverless driving." He predicted earlier this year that he will be in the second half of this year. Launched 40 unmanned vehicles for road test. "The use of Delphi as a partner will help a number of automakers to accelerate the launch of driverless cars and provide consumers with a wealth of options." Ke Zaiqi said.

Intel will leverage the capabilities of Delphi and other partners to collaborate on sensing, sensor convergence and high-performance driverless computing. In July last year, Intel has joined forces with BMW to plan a full-scale production of highly autonomous driverless solutions by 2021.

Yang Xu, Intel's vice president and president of China, told the First Financial Reporter earlier this year: "Why is driverless so hot, because it may be a data center, not just a car, on the road." Cooperating to develop a driverless platform, the goal is to redefine the future of the car.” Yang Xu said that the future car will have three core components: the most basic vehicle control technology to ensure vehicle safety; can help the car in any road and weather environment Safe driving assisted driving technology; and value-added services that can change people's driving experience.

Yang Xu further explained that unmanned driving is all the connections inside the car for Intel. Realize unmanned driving by processing big data generated by real-time computing environments and judging security. He also said that the future 5G technology and the human-computer interaction technology in the car will undergo tremendous changes, thus greatly improving the performance of autonomous driving.

Automated driving technology is still 10 years

In the era of data explosion, data center and data center analysis will become the core of future development. Whether it is data collection or analysis and transmission of data, semiconductor chips play an irreplaceable key role. The ever-increasing volume of data is becoming more and more demanding on computing speed and equipment, and the architecture of new chips is inevitable. That's why we see technology giants like Google developing their own artificial intelligence chips.

Sanjay Jha, CEO of Global foundries, the world's second-largest wafer manufacturer, told the First Financial Reporter at the World Mobile Congress in Shanghai in June this year: "Autonomous vehicles are produced during driving. The data is completely different from the traditional application, but the artificial intelligence technology is used to process the data. The gradual melting of the boundary between hardware and software provides opportunities for innovation. For example, in the development of artificial intelligence, CNN neural network will be used. Learning the network and other technologies that were not available in the past have also changed the chip architecture. Traditional semiconductor manufacturers should strive to meet the new demands created by technological development."

This is also the biggest challenge Intel faces. Apple, Google, and Microsoft, the world's largest technology companies, have begun to enter the field of artificial intelligence chips. Google released its second-generation TPU processor at the I/O conference in May this year, a high-performance processor that was converted to AI computing services. Apple is also secretly developing an automated big project, although Apple CEO Cook said that this may not necessarily be related to "autopilot", but he said that driverless is the "mother of AI." Microsoft CEO Nadella also unanimously announced last Monday that the company is no longer "mobile and cloud" priority, but "AI priority", Microsoft is developing an artificial intelligence chip, and will be used for the company's newly developed hardware equipment. .

Although major manufacturers are increasing their pace to deploy artificial intelligence, unmanned driving is still far away from practical applications.

According to the latest 2017 technology maturity curve published by research firm Gartner, driverless technology may take more than 10 years to mature. Gartner pointed out that in 2017 automakers developed by automakers and technology companies were touted by the mainstream media, leading to unrealistic and high expectations for the technology. AI is a key technology that enables automated driving based on machine learning and algorithms to accelerate. The main challenge of autopilot is cost, and of course people are also discussing reliability, ethics, and legal aspects.

Intel CEO Ke Zaiqi also believes that it will take time for the unmanned mature to become popular. “The completion of fully automated driving technology needs to go through at least one generation,” he said. “My two daughters may not need to learn to drive.”

Tesla Asia-Pacific Engineering Director Wang Wenjia told the First Financial Reporter that to be listed as a real driverless car, in addition to the accumulation of technology, the local government's regulatory support is needed. "At present, there are no regulations in China that can support the level 4 driverless cars on the road, and policies in California and other places have been established one after another." Wang Wenjia said.

Shengling Hai, vice president of research at Gartner, told the First Financial Reporter: "With the domestic laws and regulations still lag behind, it will hinder the promotion and development of driverless technology."
