Singapore Builds a "Smart State" to Integrate Big Data into People's Lives

【Global Science and Technology Report】 According to a report by the British Broadcasting Corporation on April 21, Singapore proposed the "Smart Nation Platform" and is committed to becoming the world's first smart country to promote big data technology in public transportation, health care, and information. In applications such as security and government management, the program aims to integrate technology into all aspects of life on the island.

Singapore’s public transportation system is very good at harnessing big data technology, and the bus system has a significant impact on Singapore’s public transportation. Some of the bus stations covered by the Wisdom State plan will now be equipped with interactive maps and Wi-Fi connections, and even e-books and swings, all of which are designed to allow Singapore passengers to enjoy a more enjoyable and efficient journey.

In addition, the government plans to use the Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate the buses to accurately record driving routes and distances, thereby alleviating traffic congestion and achieving effective management of motor vehicles.

Singapore’s health care sector also responds positively to the “smart nation plan.” Since November 2016, KK Women's and Children's Hospital, one of the largest and most busy hospitals in Singapore, has begun providing remote video medical consultation services for patients in non-emergency cases.

According to reports, Singapore has established a new ministerial committee to ensure the realization of its dream of a smart nation.

Harminder Singh, a senior lecturer on business information systems at Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, said that the Smarter Plan aims to establish a national science and technology infrastructure so that the government can provide new services. However, the main problem for smart countries is that excessive government control may hinder true innovation. The government may need to explain more clearly that the smart country project will improve Singapore’s employment and salary issues and thus promote the rapid development of the project.

Foreign Minister of Singapore and Vivian Balakrishnan, who is responsible for the Smart Nation Initiative, also stated that the sense of urgency is crucial to ensure Singapore’s future success.

Singapore has always been proud of its perseverance and strong professional ethics. The wisdom of the country project is also the plan for the future survival of Singapore, and the light of innovation will flash. But creativity still needs to be cultivated, and the wisdom nation’s dream needs time to fully explore its potential. (Internship compilation: Shi Kai reviewer: Liu Yang)
