TI Introduces Industry's First WiFi EV Charging Device Reference Design Offers Unique Remote Monitoring and Charging Control Opportunities

Texas Instruments (TI) recently introduced the first reference design to add WiFi connectivity to electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. As long as there is WiFi, electric car owners can remotely monitor the charging of their vehicles, covering a wide range of potential applications from home automation to searching for nearby public charging points.

Advances in battery technology and the introduction of government regulations have driven the growth of new types of electric vehicles worldwide. However, EV manufacturers still need to build more charging stations to further facilitate the driver to charge the car. The new reference design incorporates TI's SimpleLinkTM WiFi Wireless Microcontroller (MCU) technology, enabling design engineers to create solutions that intelligently charge or search for available charging stations during off-peak hours.

Faster and smarter charging

One of the major obstacles to popularizing EV charging stations is the charging time of the car. The reference design supports Level 1 charging compatible with household outlets and also supports Level 2 electric vehicle charging, which helps car owners access higher current (15A-30A and higher) connections provided by commercial office buildings. The 2-level charging device usually takes 8 hours to fill, and the owner can fully charge the car while working.

In the second half of this year, TI plans to introduce a 600V, 400A 3-level electric vehicle DC charging device reference design, which can shorten the charging time to 20-30 minutes - as long as the WiFi coverage and charging station restaurant, the owner can use the short The car is charged for lunch time. Reading blog posts, electric car charging stations are becoming smarter and faster.

TI pushes industry's first WiFi EV charging device reference design

The main advantages of the EV charging station reference design with WiFi:

Both level 1 and level 2 charging operations are supported.

Thanks to TI's SimpleLink WiFi technology, WiFi connectivity supports all smartphones, tablets, computers or smart TVs.

Power delivery up to 30 A, support expansion if larger relays are used.

Scalable to support other applications such as payment, verification and home automation design innovation.

Innovation from car to charging device

TI accelerates innovation in electric vehicles and EV charging stations through a broad portfolio of embedded processor and analog technologies, proven system expertise, and reference designs focused on reducing time to market. TI's advancements in battery management, current sensing, power management, analog signal chain and microcontroller products are driving the development of lighter-weight electric and hybrid vehicles that will cover longer trips on a single charge. Once implemented, TI is able to make charging easier with faster charging speeds and smarter charging stations.
