American university research team launches energy-saving vertical farms to improve food poverty

Vertical agriculture is considered a way to provide fresh food to urban residents while reducing the carbon footprint required for growth and transportation (carbon footprint, indicating the “carbon consumption” of a person or group). However, a student team at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) sees it as a way to improve basic nutrition in poor areas. These students are using a simple device and LED lights to develop a cheap new way to allow almost anyone to grow fresh food for their home and community.

Poverty is diverse, but the most difficult thing is food poverty. In other words, some people may suffer from food poverty because they do not have enough money to buy enough nutritious food, and even in very rich countries there may be areas known as “nutrition poverty”. Prepackaged foods in these areas are very rare and expensive, leading to malnutrition and generally poor health.

To solve this problem, a group of students from the Engineers Without Borders Association (EWB) led by Carnegie Mellon University Engineering and Public Policy (EPP)/Chemical Engineering (ChemE) undergraduate Jack Ronayne has turned to vertical agriculture as an allowable A way for people to grow food in their own homes to improve basic nutrition in poor areas.

Kelvin Gregory, professor of civil and environmental engineering at EWB, said: “Some places have limited access to fresh food due to distance, freshness or cost. We ask ourselves: Can you simply grow fresh fruits and vegetables at home? Obviously, The footprint needs to be small, so you have to go through vertical agriculture and you need to use artificial lighting, which is the problem we decided to solve."

While some vertical agricultural systems look like scenes in a science fiction movie, the CMU system looks simpler. The system is a set of metal shelves that can be purchased from stores and covered in black plastic tarps.

In fact, it looks like an indoor greenhouse. The LED lights used in the system can be set to flash quickly at different speeds to determine how much light is needed to grow the plant with minimal energy.

Gregory said: "We want to study energy efficiency. LEDs are more energy efficient than older halogen bulbs, but they also have the added benefit of being able to quickly turn on and off, so by flashing these lights at different speeds, we have been able to measure How much light is needed to grow the highest yielding plants with the least amount of energy."

In addition, the home version is relatively easy to expand, planting more plants for community vertical farms.

The current vertical farm uses 40 tomato plants. The team hopes that this study will allow everyone to get fresh, healthy food one day, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status.
