The Three Gorges Project has begun to exert its power generation benefits since 2003. At present, the cumulative power generation has reached more than 500 billion kilowatt-hours. In 2011, the amount of power generation completed was 78.293 billion kilowatt-hours.

According to the "Chongqing Daily" report, in order to solve the power shortage, Chongqing has to build UHV projects in addition to new generating units and increased outsourcing of electricity. According to the plan, this year will strive to start the construction of an UHV AC project in Sichuan Ya'an to Chongqing to transport the excess hydropower in Sichuan to Chongqing City and promote the optimal allocation of electric power resources in the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Zone.

At the same time, Chongqing will build a DC UHV project from Hami, Xinjiang to Chongqing, and strive to complete the feasibility study this year. By then, Xinjiang thermal power will be delivered directly to Chongqing Municipality to ensure the local medium and long-term energy security, in order to achieve east-west hydrothermal power, and promote the optimization of the country's resources.
