Profinet connection via Profibus device interface

Today, all components installed in a vehicle can be tracked and their quality and source determined. This is due to the quality control that comes with the production. Especially for automation systems, components are repeatedly recorded, tested and marked in a large number of production phases, and the data is saved in the Support Process. Consistency is decisive for continuous traceability. The process control technology has the function of quality assurance process management and is connected to the lower control layer via Ethernet for data acquisition. “Now, the production plan has designated Profinet to replace Profibus as the production area field control bus for high quality requirements,†said Hennings, a system designer at Daimler Electric Systems at Mercedes-Benz in Mannheim. To achieve this goal, Profinet uses a unified Ethernet network medium in the system and eliminates the need for address dial switches and bus termination resistors. At the same time, Profinet can also provide users with flexible topologies such as star, line and ring. The debugging work saves time and the performance during operation can be significantly improved. However, sometimes the specifications in the production plan will be ahead of the actual application.
Profient technology is currently not used for all measurement, coding and detection equipment used. "In the system, we must also install a Profibus interface PLC to connect a device to extend a Profibus line," Lanz continued. "Over the years, we have been using the Profibus interface leak tester. This is in actual operation. It has been verified and the modules for communication in the PLC program have been written. This explains why even the end user feels pressure when the device does not have a Profinet interface.

Alternative for Profinet connections
In the case of devices with integrated Profinet interfaces, netLINKProxy provides an alternative. The gateway is designed in the form of a DSub plug that converts each Profibus slave to a Profinet-compliant device without additional installation costs. Gateway debugging requires only four steps: plugging in the device Profibus interface, powering, configuring and exporting GSDML files. In this way, the gateway is able to run and transparently map Profibus data. “After selecting the correct module in the Profinet main station PLC, the gateway and the Profibus needle marking machine Marker3000 can start running immediately,†says Autekom project planner Oliver Kinzig. The company offers complete automation solutions from factory electrical installations and sensor systems to software engineering and commissioning. The marking machine running in the Mannheim Daimler plant is produced by ADT and currently only provides Profibus, Ethernet and Interbus communication interfaces. "The development of the Profinet interface is underway, but it takes a long time. We are now using the netLINKProxy gateway to make up for the time gap. Daimler also accepted this solution," explains ADT general manager Johann Krutsch. For ADT, this solution is currently a good reason to delay Profinet development. The annual sales volume of the marking machine is not very large, but Profinet's upgrade development requires a five-figure fund. Moreover, the Profinet protocol has not been fully standardized, and phased investment is a big problem. Therefore, the netLINKProxy gateway is very suitable for those relatively large-scale sales as a whole, and these companies are generally small and medium-sized, still hesitating to develop Profinet. Through this gateway, the device can be connected to the Profinet network without any development costs.
Outstanding work to Profinet
Profinet nodes are growing in automation systems, and manufacturers are also very willing to invest and are accelerating the upgrade of their equipment. During the transition phase, netLINKProxy can help them continue to provide traditional Profibus devices. The form factor of the DSub plug is very small and the price is close to the integrated Profinet bus inline module. Therefore, some manufacturers will decide to temporarily abandon the development of new network interface plans.
If the entire Profibus link needs to be integrated into the Profinet network, the Proxy gateway can also be installed as a full-featured device directly on the rail, integrating several Profibus slaves into the Profinet network at the same time.
