ST's new TS4657 integrates audio digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and line-drive functions on a single chip to feed audio to the audio Line-Out output of a set-top box, DVD player, portable multimedia player, sound card or similar device signal. The Line-Out output interface can directly connect and drive a home external amplifier.
The TS4657 uses an internal power management unit that produces a 2.2Vrms audio output signal from 3.0V to 5.5V, driving the Line-Out output without the need for a separate high voltage supply. Similar devices typically require four external capacitors to drive the charge pump, but ST's high-frequency design has integrated these devices on-chip, saving board space and material costs. In addition, the positive and negative voltage generation functions make the audio signal referenced to the ground line voltage, eliminating the decoupling capacitors in the audio signal line.
The TS4657's operating voltage range is from 3.0V to 5.5V, which increases design flexibility. Because the product design is simplified, engineers can use the same device for different products. The new device's operating current is only 7.4mA, which is one-third of the competitive product, which can greatly improve the energy efficiency of the design. The dynamic range is up to 93dB, the supply voltage rejection ratio is 80dB (at 217Hz), and the distortion is 81dB THD+N (at 0dBFS).
