To help portable design engineers introduce energy-efficient small size in the market, Freescale has added a new MC34726/27DC/DC step-down in the analog portfolio to optimize space-constrained power applications.
The MC34726/27 devices feature Freescale's SMARTMOSTM technology. In mobile applications where lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries are used, this technology can increase their efficiency at low loads and extend standby time.
When the standard buck output load is low, most of the energy loss becomes loss. The MC34726/27 buck regulator smoothly transitions to pulse hopping mode by reducing the switching frequency and increasing battery life by using the Freescale Gravity Mode architecture for low output activity such as cellular standby. Gravity mode architectures are commonly used to improve ripple performance during low load currents while maintaining low quiescent current.
With its ultra-small package of 2mm x 2mm x 0.65mm and high operating frequency, the MC34726/27 requires virtually no board for a truly small form factor. These devices are designed for applications where board space is critical and applications that use single-cell Li-Ion batteries, such as PMP and MP3 players.
