Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX8678, the industry's only white light (WLED) driver with a high-efficiency negative charge pump, and a fully differential, bridged audio amplifier. The single-chip solution is available in a tiny, 3mm x 3mm x 0.8mm TQFN package that is 50% smaller than the standard two-piece solution. The MAX8678's negative voltage architecture completely eliminates high-side resistance, delayed 1x to 2x mode switching transients during battery discharge, and offers the industry's highest efficiency. The independent adaptive mode switching of each LED further extends battery life even if the LED forward voltage (Vf) has a large offset. This range of innovative features has enabled the MAX8678 to increase efficiency by 12% compared to competing solutions, making it ideal for use in devices with limited space and battery capacity such as cellular phones, smartphones, PDAs, and other handheld devices.
The MAX8678 is the only device in the WLED that also integrates a mono, Class AB audio amplifier. The audio amplifier accepts differential input signals and provides excellent noise rejection for improved audio quality in audio reconstruction. The amplifier is also capable of outputting 1.1W of power to the speaker in a differential form via a bridge (BTL) load. This architecture provides up to four times the output power compared to traditional single-ended output stages, eliminating the need for output decoupling capacitors and further reducing the number of external components. The amplifier has excellent PSRR performance and is 90dB at 1kHz. In addition, the device features a flexible, single-wire serial pulse interface that can be set in steps of 3dB and a gain of -9dB to +18dB, while also providing noise suppression to ensure a smooth and clean sound quality.
The MAX8678 is specified to operate over the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). The chip starts at $1.65 (2500 tablets, FOB USA). An evaluation board is also available to speed up the design process.
