GDC Research Report: AR, VR Developers Significant Growth from Baidu VR

A survey of game developers participating in the GDC conference showed that there has been a significant increase in the number of developers of AR and VR headlines.

The 2017 GDC State of the Game Industry collected data from 4,500 GDC participants. The report shows that 39% of respondents are developing content for AR and VR head-ups.

Current

2016 was the year when the main head finally got onto the shelves, and the number of developers focusing on immersive platforms has grown substantially. The survey shows that the number of developers developing content for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift is at the top, with 25% and 24%, respectively. Followed by PlayStation VR (13%) and Samsung Gear VR (13%).

2. The future

As for the future, developers' interest in HTC Vive seems to be increasing. 40% of respondents stated that they expect their next VR/AR project (after the current project) will target Vive. Rift and PlayStation VR were 37% and 26% respectively.

3. Exclusive content

11% of respondents said they are developing exclusive AR/VR games. The gap between Vive (33%) and Rift (24%) is widening, and PlayStation VR is growing at a rate of 15%.

4. The most interested AR/VR platform

In addition to current and future projects, the report also investigates which VR/AR heads the developer is most interested in. Here, Vive also took the lead, with 45% of developers expressing their interest in Vive. 30% chose Rift, and PlayStation VR has 29%. Interestingly, 17% of developers are interested in Google Daydream, which is 13% higher than Gear VR.

5. Most developers see AR/VR as a sustainable long-term business

When it comes to whether AR/VR is considered a sustainable business, game developers have expressed great confidence. 75% of people believe that AR/VR will achieve long-term success as a gaming platform, which is consistent with last year's 2016 GDC State of the Industry.
