According to the industrial and commercial information, the main information of Xiaomi Communication Technology Co., Ltd. is consistent with that of Xiaomi Technology, and the registered address is also the same building. This means that Xiaomi Communication Technology Co., Ltd. is also a subsidiary of Xiaomi Technology.
The appearance of "Xiaomi VR" indicates that Xiaomi's layout in the VR field may be officially announced soon. In addition, Xiaomi's first product in the VR field may also be coming out soon.
In fact, in the field of VR, Xiaomi is already long overdue. Before Xiaomi, Samsung, LeTV, Huawei, Lenovo and other mobile phone manufacturers have developed or jointly released VR products.
A VR team has been established at the end of last year
On November 5, 2015, a photo of Lei Jun (weibo) trying on black and white VR glasses was exposed. At the Wuzhen Internet Conference in December, Lei Jun also expressed his interest in technologies such as VR and robotics.
At the Xiaomi annual meeting on January 15 this year, Lei Jun announced that he decided to build the Xiaomi Discovery Lab and first enter the field of robotics and VR.
Since then, after the Xiaomi 5 conference, the Xiaomi Discovery Lab was officially established under the leadership of Xiaomi router general manager Tang Mu and Xiaomi co-founder KK (Huang Jiangji). The first project was virtual reality (VR).
Huang Jiangji said on Weibo, "We sincerely invite experts from all walks of life to join Xiaomi to develop black technology. We start with VR!"
Currently, Xiaomi Discovery Lab is recruiting 3D engine R&D engineers, computer graphics algorithm researchers, Graphics+GPU engineers, 3D designers, user experience leaders and other positions.
In mid-March of this year, Lei Jun said at an event that VR brings a very shocking experience, but it may take at least 5 to 10 years for large-scale applications.
Lei Jun did not disclose the latest progress of Xiaomi in the VR field. But he believes that VR will explode in the extreme customer base and vertical fields in the next two to three years. Xiaomi also set up a VR team at the end of last year, and it is currently advancing relatively quickly.
Mobile phone manufacturers become one of the main forces of VR
In China, for the many companies that have entered VR, we can roughly divide them into four categories: start-ups, Internet giants, video or game websites, and mobile phone manufacturers.
In fact, Xiaomi's "muscle show" in the VR field is already long overdue. Prior to this, many mobile phone manufacturers, including Samsung, HTC, LeTV, Lenovo, Huawei, etc., have already released (or jointly released) VR products.
Among them, Samsung's first VR product, Gear VR, and HTC's first VR product, Vive, have received a lot of praise from the outside world. At the beginning of March this year, HTC Vive opened for pre-order, and the domestic price reached 6,888 yuan. Huawei officially released its first VR glasses at the P9 domestic press conference held yesterday. According to Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business, Huawei’s VR glasses have achieved an ultra-low latency of 20 milliseconds, which is much lower than similar products at 100 millimeters. Therefore, Huawei’s VR glasses have no dizziness. In terms of content, Huawei VR provides more than 4000 free movies and more than 40 games. However, Huawei did not disclose the product price or time to market.
In December last year, LeEco released its first VR product in Beijing, LeEco Cool1, which can be adapted to Le1 and Le1Pro mobile phones, priced at 149 yuan. In addition, LeEco has invested tens of millions of dollars in Lingjing VR.
Xiaomi also had a certain investment layout in the VR field before. In December last year, Dapeng VR announced that it had received 180 million yuan in financing. Investors included Xunlei and Kaiying Network. After the investment is completed, Xunlei will become the largest shareholder among Dapeng VR institutional investors. And Xiaomi is also a major shareholder of Xunlei, that is to say, Xiaomi has indirectly invested in Dapeng VR.
