HDR, also known as High-Dynamic Range, was originally used to enhance the camera's ability to photograph. However, in the last two years, HDR has also been widely used in notebooks, PC monitors, and smart TVs as consumers upgrade and users' requirements for screen resolution and image quality have increased. In response, the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) gave the answer and announced the first HDR standard DisplayHDR for PC monitors.
According to reports, DisplayHDR 1.0 is divided into three levels of DisplayHDR 400, DisplayHDR 600, and DisplayHDR 1000, depending on the characteristics of the brightness, color gamut, color depth, and rise time.
Among them, DisplayHDR 400 standard is 400nit brightness, 95% of ITU-R BT.709 color gamut, VESA said "400nit brightness than the current SDR standard brightness higher than the notebook screen 50nit, and the mainstream panel color is the existing 6-bit Jitter to 8-bit. In addition, DisplayHDR 400 also requires HDR-10 support."
Display HDR 600 requires 600nit brightness, 99% ITU-R BT.709 and 90% DCI-P3 65 color gamut; while DiplayHDR 1000 is based on Diplay HDR 600, the screen brightness requirement is increased to 1000nit.
It should be noted that these three levels require true 8-bit color display panels. Moreover, the VESA Display HDR certification specification is only for LCD displays, not for OLED panels, and it is not guaranteed to be compatible with existing HDR content and games.
In addition, VESA revealed that the first batch of DisplayHDR-certified products will be unveiled at CES 2018 in early January.
