BMW launches AR application to customize vehicles and walk into the car

Last month, BMW introduced an interesting augmented reality experience through Snapchat. Now the car manufacturer is bringing the same immersive computing technology directly to iOS.

With Apple's ARKit, the BMW i Visualizer app allows you to select and customize real-size versions of BMW i3, i3s or i8 cars from anywhere.

In addition to simply allowing you to change the color of the car and the rim style, the app also allows you to walk into the car and see detailed virtual reproductions of the car interior. You can also turn on lights and radios and even open the doors.

Two-finger swipes allow you to rotate the vehicle, or you can walk around the vehicle as I tested the app in Central Park in New York. I tested it with the iPad Pro. This experience can be said to be very real.

In fact, while recording, another vehicle passes by and the real car almost looks as true as the virtual vehicle due to the true proportion and shadow of the virtual vehicle.

Shortly after the first release of ARKit, we saw some early demonstrations of this feature, most notably the virtual Tesla created by independent developers. But now this is a real-world application for ARKit by a large automaker and it is performing so well that it may actually sell some cars.

The app launched an initial release for Android devices on Google Play earlier this year, but this is the first free app version to use ARKit on iOS.
